Land and Sea Scapes In Alan Berry
On show in the main building of Coventry University (opposite the cathedral), are landscapes and seascapes, partly inspired by Frieda's homeland Holland, partly by other countries she travelled to and importantly by myths and legends.
Most of the paintings are inhabited by animals. These creatures invite you to step inside and experience a surrealist world; like yet unlike ours.
On first looks, the atmosphere is friendly. But underneath every cheerful picture the viewer can perceive disconcerting elements, rather like in a fairy tale, with themes such as vulnerability, aggression and fear.

Ladies of Science, a Side Show
A Joint Exhibition of Van de Poll and Wilcox, funded by the new bursary Scheme of Artspace
This exhibition will transform a venue in Coventry into a weird and wonderful place that is grafted upon a Victorian laboratory, in which paintings, drawings, and objects are displayed. There will be creatures in various states of experimentation, to be discovered by the public in a mysterious, freakish and ghostly atmosphere. All this adds up to the voyeuristic and interactive character of the exhibition.
We will combine the installation of visual art with performance. Furthermore we will organise workshops for school children. In general our aim is to reach people that do not tend to be interested in art or visit art galleries, so they can meet art and artists in a different way.
We want to invigilate the exhibition ourselves, in the guise of and performing as illicit ‘Ladies of Science’. This gives the public a chance to meet the artists in a playful way and will point out the fact that women were not allowed to be scientists in Victorian times. Thus ‘the Side Show’, like a true side show, is meant to be an underground event in which everything can happen.
The venue we will be using is normally not open to the public. In keeping with the character of our exhibition, we prefer to use an old, cobwebby & spooky building as there are many standing unoccupied and unused in Coventry. One of our purposes is to inform the public about Coventry’s historic sites.
At the moment we are negiotating with the Council about the use of Whitefriars in Coventry, London Road/Gulson Road, founded in 1342. It is reputed to be haunted. The Herbert Gallery stores their collection of stuffed animals there, which we intend to include in our installation.
